SOL-GEL SYNTHESIS OF TiO2 NANOPARTICLES AND THEIR ENCAPSULATION IN SiO2 XEROGEL

Experiment 2 involves synthesis of two component solutions: (1) a sol-gel solution of a colloid of silica nanoparticles and (2) synthesis of a colloid of titanium oxide nanoparticles. Theses are straight forward synthesizes achieved by simply mixing the right ratio of chemicals for the case of the silica solution and the same for the titanium oxide solution, except that it is follow with refluxing of the titanium oxide solution for a prescribed time. The solution s are mixed in an appropriate ratio and allowed to gel. When this solution is dried the results are a high surface xerogels with encapsulated nanoparticles of titanium oxide, see figure 4 below.
